Development of family business management
One of the basic challenges of family business is the development of its management. A steward is a person who deals with how to build and pass on a legacy to future generations.
«Stewardship is an evolving concept. Historically, stewardship reflects the need for stewards (owners or managers) to be accountable for their actions to resource providers.
But in a family company, this concept has a much broader meaning. Families active in business often see themselves as stewards of family wealth; In particular, they have a long-term orientation and manage the business with future generations in mind.
Stewardship is an evolving concept. This requires the clarity of intentions and goals, the establishment of fundamental and empowering principles of family governance and family business, and the commitment of the family to the idea of the superiority of the family’s interests over the interests of its individual members.
“Culture of Stewardship” is supported as a reasonable and attainable thing during the boom and growth of the business, but it becomes a source of tension with the reduction of profit or not providing proper retirement for the elderly members of the family business ownership.
Fostering a stewardship attitude means maintaining a family consensus around the idea that the business is a shared asset that should be developed for the long-term benefit of the family. In light of this concept, optimal use of 4 different types of capital are possible as follows:
Common goals of owners and managers influence motivation and organizational control mechanisms, highlight trust, and emphasize empowerment rather than strict supervision. Managers are generally loyal to their business and strive for its success, and this orientation can increase competition by developing trust, reputation, customer relationships, and employee engagement. If we want to summarize a single concept in the light of which we know what is the basis of competitive advantages and distinguishing features of family businesses, that concept should be “trust”; Trust is the source of long-term prospects, loyalty and commitment.
The “Leadership with Trust” model develops the elements of trust and focuses on specific behaviors for which we should be held accountable. In this model, trust as a part of business relationships 8 The key elements are defined below. In situations where a lack of trust is felt, these elements can be used to determine which behaviors create trust and what solutions are needed to rebuild, grow and maintain it..
1- Territory: Determining the limits of responsibilities to make a real commitment and stick to it.
2-Reliability: Clarity of what we undertake and what we do not undertake.
3- Merit: Having technical knowledge and interpersonal skills to do the job.
۴– responsiveness: Accepting and making up for our mistakes, doing what we need to do to make things right and make sure they don’t happen again..
5- Confidentiality: Not sharing information that is not ours.
6- Honesty: Having a reputation for honesty and truthfulness.
7- non-judgement: Responding non-judgmentally when someone tells us something in an intimate setting builds trust.
8- opening: Freely share ideas and information.
Although we don’t have to show people all of these elements all the time, they help us understand how to build high-trust relationships. Knowing this model empowers us and those around us to hold ourselves and others accountable for behaviors that lead to higher or lower trust in our family or business..
Maintaining a stewardship perspective is a predictable challenge for family businesses. Therefore, it should be planned and for The following 4 principles pledged:
1. Determining the road map; Attention to independence and clarity of purpose.
3. Being a part of the landscape; Attention to the wider world.
3. Being a part of the landscape; Attention to the wider world.
4. Planning for the future; Consistency between short term and long term.
Consider preparing a “stewardship statement” as part of your family charter or mission statement and support it on the following:
