A family business is a company or a set of activities that is owned by the members of a family and is managed by two or more family members who work together to manage and grow the business.

Local supermarkets, restaurants, construction companies, agriculture, production, commerce and retail (department stores and malls) which are owned by family members are all examples of family businesses. These members are responsible for current operations, accounting, customer service or business management. Often, these family organizations have a unique dynamic because they combine personal relationships with professional relationships, creating unique advantages and challenges..

This exclusive requirement is the result of family interactions and interventions in business through their management, control, governance and ownership. Classical teachings remind us that knowing and understanding the basic issues of family businesses, including intergenerational transfer, business continuity, succession and succession, and the life cycle of the business, with the help of the link between the three areas that It is possible as shown below. These spheres act in a feedback loop and influence each other.

Each of these areas has its own structure and characteristics, for example, the family area consists of four stages;

  • New business family (first generation),
  • entering the profession   next generation),
  • cooperation with each other (intergenerational communication ),
  • Intergenerational transmission (continuity over time)

The domain of ownership also has three stages including:

  • Ownership monitoring and control stage  (founding ownership),
  • Close partnership stage (ownership of spouse, children, siblings),
  • The distant coalition stage (joint ownership of cousins, aunts, etc.)

is

Also, the business field has three stages:

  • launch
  • development
  • Maturity stage

is formed Of course, dealing with all these dimensions requires its own discussion, which is not included in this article.

In the family business promotion association, due to its existence and mission, we are forced to use the fourth field, which we have named the field of  ” promotion”  of family businesses. In fact, the dimension of promotion will not only be surrounded by the aforementioned three dimensions, but its attention is directed to the entire value chain and ecosystem of family businesses. Something that has been neglected in our country so far. Similarly, the family business community; This huge and influential talent has benefited less from the advantages of having professional support and consulting resources, protection and legal support and has faced more fundamental challenges.

Therefore, there is a place for it to be properly cared for by all those involved in the legislation, the government, and especially the actors of the private sector.

The task is completely transparent and clear, it should be cultured with the necessary and sufficient study and planning to expand the support and growth of family businesses and the prosperity of related production and service industries. Undoubtedly, this large number of activists are of special importance for outstanding economic, social, cultural and environmental reasons.

  • First They contribute to the economy and social welfare by creating jobs and income for individuals and communities. Therefore, supporting family businesses means supporting local employment and economic growth.
  • Second Family business They often prefer long-term continuity and stability over short-term profit. They tend to show a strong commitment to society and are likely to reinvest their profits. Of course, continuity and sustainability are aligned to some extent, but in fact they are completely different and differ in their main focus. Durability refers to the ability of a product, system, or organization to resist wear, stress, or damage over a long lifetime. While sustainability focuses on environmental consequences and resource management in the life cycle of the system or organization. This includes efficient use of materials, energy consumption, waste generation and ecological footprint with the aim of minimizing negative effects on the environment and promoting responsible use of resources. A product or a system can be unsustainable if it consumes too many resources or causes significant environmental damage. On the contrary, if the sustainable product does not have the characteristics of continuity to stand against wear and tear, it will not necessarily be durable. Therefore, family businesses with a long-term perspective can meet the requirements of continuity and sustainability at the same time.
  • Third Family businesses often have a deeper understanding of their needs and preferences due to their close relationships with customers. This makes it possible to provide personalized and high-quality products or services that are useful to consumers.. Additionally, family businesses often have a strong sense of values and tradition, hence embodying a unique and attractive heritage that differentiates them from non-family businesses.

In this sense, supporting family businesses means preserving cultural and historical diversity in the perspective of the family business community. They provide opportunities for family members to work together, strengthen their relationships, and transfer their knowledge and expertise from one generation to another. This sense of continuity and heritage is valuable not only to the family, but also to the wider community. In general, supporting family businesses contributes to the prosperity of local economies, preserving traditions, diversity and strengthening strong social bonds.

In the light of such importance, it is necessary to take care of the culture of family businesses more comprehensively at the national level and promote them appropriately.
